Workshop to launch primary research on young people and smoking in Africa

Laboratory for Survey & Research for Development (SRD Lab), in collaboration with the Research Initiative for Social Development (RISD), is committed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to providing technical and advisory services as part of the adolescent smoking information programme (DaYTA).

The programme is being implemented by Development Gateway (DG), a subsidiary of IREX, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The programme will design and implement primary research on youth smoking in the three target countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya and Nigeria to fill key data gaps.

The proposed research should address the following key questions:

  1. What is the prevalence of smoking among adolescents aged 10-17 in the target countries?
  2. What are the multi-level factors (e.g. individual, household and environmental) associated with all forms of adolescent smoking (e.g. smoking and smokeless tobacco) in each country?

On 1 September 2023, SRD Lab took part in the launch workshop for this research study. The overarching objective was to engage in an in-depth discussion aimed at validating the methodology, defining the expected deliverables, as well as endorsing the projected timeline for the study. We look forward to sharing the latest news on this study in the near future.
